LOG CABIN BOY SCOUT TROOP #1

COVERED BRIDGE DISTRICT- COBB COUNTY

SCOUT COMMITTEE MEETING

February 18th, 2010

Chairman Mike Nagle called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM.

Steve Pattillo made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 2010 meeting, Greg Hogan seconded, motion approved.

GENERAL INFORMATION;

Newspaper recycling is going well, this requires no effort on the troop’s part and additional newspaper collections will increase our income. Please no plastic bags. The amount of other trash has increased, this just penalizes the Troop as to the amount of money we collect.

A flyer to advertise the newspaper recycling has been developed, duplicated and is available for distribution in the general neighborhood. The number to call when the recycle bin is full is 770 424 6397, (after hours leave a message)

Web site is up and running, check out www.bsatroop1.net . All types of information is available for the troop at this site and it will be kept more current than a monthly newsletter/meeting minutes can be. Items such as calendar of events for the troop and also the Covered Bridge District with merit badge clinics, etc;.

PARENTS NOTE: This site is your best way to keep abreast of the schedule and needs of your scout.

RECENT ACTIVITIES;

Chairman Nagle reported on the progress of Aaron Settle’s Eagle Project. He has the plans and material and is going to start construction after the pine straw sale and the weather warms up.

Matthew is deciding on his Eagle project.

Wesley recently completed the First Class Scout requirements and received the Troop’s first Scouting Centennial Badge.

Greg Hogan reported that the following Scouts crossed over from Cub Scouting to Troop One; Will, Carter, and Spenser. Troop One also has three additional Scouts; Jerry, Gus, and Liam, these boys either did not participate in Cubs or they are “in between” Cubs and Boy Scouts.

Boy Scouts books, neckerchiefs, and slides were awarded to the new Scouts.

It was noted that scouts should have at least one parent attend some Troop meetings, so that the parent gets to know the leaders, other scouts and what is expected of the scouts.

The annual pine straw sale for 2010 has been set for March 12 and 13th. This year we are going to try Pay-Pal as a possible way for payment of the pine straw. It was suggested that additional e-mail updates and notifications be sent out to assure good customer coverage.

At the recent banquet for the Boy Scout Covered Bridge District (which Troop One is part of) our own Mike Nagle was presented with special Scouting award for his dedication and enthusiasm to Pack One and Troop One over the years.

It was noted that two Scouts that achieved the Eagle Scout rank have not had their Court of Honor to publicly congratulate them. The Troop has the Eagle pin and other documents. These will be given to the scouts and/or families for their safe keeping and if in the future they desire a COH, we will co-operate with them for the ceremony.

Scouting Sunday went extremely well, the Log Cabin Church is very proud of their Scouting sponsorships, we had Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and families attend.

Sam, John, Wesley and Charlie earned the engineering Merit Badge at a recent clinic at Lockheed-Martin Aeronautical Company.

Dean Howell attended the Atlanta Boy Scout Council Summer camp kick off meeting.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES;

PINE STRAW SALE; MARCH 12TH AND 13TH. HELP FROM ALL WILL BE NEEDED.

In January 2010, the Boy Scouts of American issued a new updated physical form, so scouts and leaders will need to use the new form, which is available on the web site for the Atlanta Council.

In May 2010 the biggest local scouting event will be held at Bert Adams Camp site, as a Super Scouting Weekend campout is held to celebrate the 100th year of Scouting in America.

The Troop is going camping the weekend of Feb 26,27 & 28 to Hard Labor Creek and on the Saturday visit the Micro Car Museum.

SAVE the DATE”, Summer camp at Woodruff campground for this summer is June 20-26th.

NEW BUSINESS;

The Advancement Committee of the Troop has recommended, that to facilitate advancement for our scouts that the Troop adopt certain goals and awards.

  1. A scout should advance from cross-over from Cubs to Boy Scout First Class in 18 months or less.

  2. After First Class; advancement into the leadership ranks of Star and Life needs to be motivated; There are too many Merit Badges started but not finished “partials”, and Eagle required merit badges are also not pursued. This will leave Scouts short of the highest achievements and contribution to themselves and to the Troop.

  3. The Merit Badge goal selected for this program is; 3 Eagle required Merit Badges completed and 4 other Merit Badges completed before the end of 2010. Achievement of these goals by any or all scouts will earn that (those) Scout(s) a substantial prize. The plan is to carry this on to future years so that we have more Scouts advancing into the leadership ranks and the ultimate; EAGLE.

Mike Nagle reported for Denise Settle (Troop Treasurer) the following balance;

$X,XXX.XX, after paying $nnn for 11 slots at Summer Camp and $nnn.nn for pine straw sale expenses; advertisements, postage, etc.

Respectfully submitted;

Charles Switzer, Secretary

Meeting was adjourned at 8:26 PM. At a motion by Steve Pattillo, seconded and approved.
