August 19th, 2010

Chairman Mike Nagle called the meeting to order at 7:12 PM.

GENERAL INFORMATION-

Newspaper recycling is going well, this requires no effort on the troop’s part and additional newspaper collections will increase our income. Please no plastic bags. The amount of other trash has increased, this just penalizes the Troop as to the amount of money we collect.

A flyer to advertise the newspaper recycling has been developed, duplicated and is available for distribution in the general neighborhood. The number to call when the recycle bin is full is 770-424-6397, (after hours leave a message)

Web site is up and running, check out www.bsatroop1.net . All types of information is available for the troop at this site and it will be kept more current than a monthly newsletter/meeting minutes can be. Items such as calendar of events for the troop and also the Covered Bridge District with merit badge clinics, etc;.

PARENTS NOTE: This site is your best way to keep abreast of the schedule and needs of your scout.

Chairman Nagle asked for a progress report with Aaron Settle and completion of paperwork for his Eagle Board of Review.

Troop One proposes the following people to be on Aaron's Eagle Board of Review; Rick Glisson, David Hutcherson, Steve Pattillo and whoever the District assigns to serve. The suggested date is the third Thursday of September.

Matthew Hamilton now needs to identify his Eagle project and request it's approval.

Merit Badges earned; Sam Hogan; Citizenship in the Community. Sam Hogan and Wesley Howell; Environmental Science, Carter Haydon, First Aid.

The plumbing merit badge clinic planned and conducted by Keith and Melissa Mikulka was well planned and executed; 10 scouts from Troop One were able to attend and earned the badge that day. The clinic was also open to scouts from other Troops and 3 additional scouts also earned the badge. Keith and Melissa have set a high bar of preparation and execution for Troop One Merit Badge Clinics.

Santhosh Karnik and his mother attended a recent Troop meeting to thank Troop One leaders for their leadership with Santhosh and encouraging him to accomplish the Eagle Rank.

It was noted that all adults registered with Scouting have to take the Youth Protection training offered by the Scouting organization. This is an online program that is required every two years for the adults in scouting.

Treasurer’s report; Denise Settle reported that the Troop bank account is $NNNN.nn, recent expenses were for the plumbing merit badge clinic where Troop One scouts were not charged, but the scouts from other Troops had to pay for supplies.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES-

Carpentry Merit Badge clinic on September 11th, this is tentative for Troop One Scouts and will be at a Home Depot away from the immediate area. This will also be a chance to complete a merit badge in one day.

The Covered Bridge District of the Atlanta Area Scouts is having a camporee at Woodruff Scout Reservation the weekend of September 17th.

The Scout Fest is scheduled at the Galleria on October 23rd, 10A.M. to 4 P.M. Troop One will have a booth and the handling and treatment of the American flag will be their theme. This Fest is for Scouts and Cub Scouts; Boy Scouts will be dressed in class A uniforms, parents of Troop One scouts should wear the Troop Tee shirt. At this Fest there will be many other scouting activities represented by other Troops in the area.

OTHER BUSINESS AND ACTIVITIES-

Next years pine straw sale has been scheduled for March 11 & 12, 2011. (reported last month).

The Pack One Cub Scout organization that is also sponsored by the Log Cabin Church and is the feeder organization that guides boys to Troop One as they reach the Boy Scouting age.

The Pack meets once a month during the school year as a group of Dens that represent different ages up to 11-12, where the boys will “cross-over” to Boy Scouts, have started to have their monthly Pack meeting at Troop One facilities. (The Pack “Dens” which are smaller grouping by age will normally meet weekly at homes or on field trips)

This Pack Meeting is usually with the parents going over programs, etc. while the Cubs and siblings play. It was recommended that the older Scouts that have attended Youth Leadership Training (Greenbar) be given the opportunity to exercise some of their training at these Pack Meetings to supervise and coordinate the activities of these young scouts while the parents plan future activities. This would be about 1 hour on a Sunday evening once a month.

It was also noted that scouts should have at least one parent attend some Troop meetings, so that the parent gets to know the leaders, other scouts and what is expected of the scouts.

YOUTH PROTECTION training is being required of all adults participating in Scout Activities.

OTHER ACTIVITIES-

In line with the Troop’s encouragement of advancement for the scouts, (see last months plan for advancement for the scouts); the following leaders have qualified or working on qualification to be Merit Badge Counselors: Keith Mikulka, Plumbing; Melissa Mikulka, Music with Marie Bowles assisting; Greg Hogan, Public Speaking, Mike Nagle, Auto Maintenance, Steve Pattillo, Salesmanship.

As noted above the plumbing merit badge clinic has been conducted and was very successful.

By the end of the year, Denise Settle will transfer the Troop One Treasurer’s job to Anne Money, Denise is planning on remaining available to assist with this job. She has done an excellent job with scouting all the way from early cubs to Eagle Scouts. THANK YOU!

Pop Corn time has arrived; this fund raiser enables individual scouts to earn prizes and money for individual scouting activities.
